Nina Obuljen Koržinek - 7th World Summit Programme Director
Nina Obuljen Koržinek graduated from the Academy of Music and Faculty of Arts of the University of Zagreb. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph. D. in Political Science from the University of Zagreb. She has also completed a one-year programme at the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia. Nina Obuljen Koržinek works as a research associate at the Institute for Development and International Relations in Zagreb (IRMO). Her research interests include cultural and media policy studies as well as European studies. She participates as member of the research team in different projects of the Department for Culture and Communication of the IRMO and publishes books and articles as well as expert studies in Croatian and international journals. She organizes conferences and round tables, participates and speaks at international conferences and seminars and takes part in the work of different organizations and networks. She lectures as a guest lecturer at the University of Zagreb and the Diplomatic Academy in Zagreb. She worked as an expert on various projects for UNESCO, Council of Europe, European Cultural Foundation, UNDP, European Parliament etc.
Nina Obuljen Koržinek is a member of the team of the CULTURELINK Network – International Network for Research and Cooperation in Cultural Development established by UNESCO and the Council of Europe in 1989 with the focal point at the IRMO Zagreb. She was a member of the editorial team of the Culturelink Journal from 2000 until 2006.
In 2004 she received the European Cultural Policy Research Award for her research on the impact of the EU enlargement on cultural policies which was published in the book Why we need European Cultural Policies: impact of EU enlargement on countries in transition, Amsterdam, 2006. Together with professor Joost Smiers she edited the book entitled UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions: Making it Work published in the Culturelink edition in 2006.
Nina Obuljen Koržinek held positions of State Secretary (2008-2011) and Assistant Minister (2006-2008) at the Croatian Ministry of Culture where she was responsible for the sectors of arts, culture and media. She was a member of the negotiating team for the Croatian accession to the EU responsible for the fields of culture and education as well as information society and media. Nina Obuljen Koržinek was also head of the Croatian delegation (2004-2005) for negotiations on the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention (2010). She was a Member of the Panel of experts for the Council of Europe project on the Evaluation of the cultural policy of Turkey (2009-2013).
From 2001 until 2006 she was a member of the Steering Committee of the International Network for Cultural Diversity. From 2012 until 2014 she was the Chairperson of the Programme Council of the Croatian Radio and Television. In 2013 she received the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture.
